Made Up Words
I've been having a lot of pain in my lower back in the last month. In October I had similar pains and found out it was due to an infected cyst on my tailbone. I could get into all the gross details, but I won't; it grosses me out just to think about some of the stuff that transpired back there. Anyway, last week I went to my doctor cause the pain was getting to the point that I couldn't sleep well. She promptly sent me to get an x-ray at the hospital and gave me some muscle relaxers and antibiotics (just in case it's an infection again). Two days later my doctor's office calls me to tell me a bunch of medical terms about what the x-ray pertained and that she now wants me to get an MRI and they went ahead and scheduled it for me. Thanks.
Last Friday I went to Kentuckiana Diagnostics to have the MRI done. I was nervous about it since I have some issues with being confined in small spaces. I managed to make it through the twenty minute procedure with minimal panic attacks. Good thing I didn't have to be strapped down like I thought you did for one of these, so that helped. Have you ever had this done? I totally wasn't expecting the noises the machine made. I figured out where the sound effects for those cheesy 60's & 70's outer space movies came from. On Tuesday my doctor's office called back to tell me what they found (again with a bunch of medical, made-up sounding terms) and that now she's referring me to a Neurologist. Thanks again.
Wednesday I decided that I wanted to know, specifically and in layman's terms, what my diagnosis was. I stopped by the MRI place and asked for a copy of the report and films from my mri. They were happy to provide me with both in about twenty minutes. I was so excited! I got back in my car and headed back to work. As soon as I sat down at my desk I pulled out the films first and decided that I didn't know what the hell I was looking at other than various views of my spine. Then I decided that maybe the report would help break down the pictures better.
I'm not going to copy the whole report, but let me just give you a few sentences:
"....mild impression on the dural sac and there is also a small annular rent."
"A Schmorl's node was noted in the superior aspect of the S1 vertebral body. The conus was normal."
"First degree spondylolisthesis at L5-S1 causing mild central spinal stenosis..."
Where to start?
-First of all, there are no spelling errors in those quotes. The words in question are spelled correctly.
-I have had a hard time finding anything in Google or WebMD for any of this stuff.
-Annular Rent?? When I read that, I think I thought something like, Yeah, I'm pretty sure our annular rent is about $12,000, but maybe they think it should be more. I cannot convey how much Ben and I have laughed about that.
Thank God that at least the conus was normal! (If anyone knows what that means, please let me know)
If I can figure out the scanner at work, I'll post a copy of the report. Until then, habba enjoy! And let me know if anyone can decipher any of the above listed items.

Dural sac: The membranous sac that encases the spinal cord within the bony structure of the vertebral column.
Internal derangement: This refers to a rent within the inner annular fibers of the disc and implies migration of the nucleus pulposus into the rent or tear.
Annular means shaped like or forming a ring. A rent can be defined as a rip: an opening made forcibly as by pulling apart.
Schmorl's node: An upward and downward protrusion (pushing into) of a spinal disk's soft tissue into the bony tissue of the adjacent vertebrae (the bony building blocks of the spine).
Schmorl's nodes are most common in the middle and lower spine.
Schmorl's nodes are common, especially with minor degeneration of the aging spine. Schmorl's nodes usually cause no symptoms, but reflect that "wear and tear" of the spine has occurred over time. Schmorl's nodes are a helpful x-ray finding as an indicator of degenerative process that may be affecting a patient's spine.
Schmorl's nodes are defined as herniations of the intervertebral disc through the vertebral end-plate. These lesions are believed to be associated with trauma, especially in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.
It is generally agreed that trauma likely precipitates the actual formation of the Schmorl's node, but a possible congenital origin of a vertebral end-plate defect has also been suggested. It is now generally accepted that these nodes could predispose the disc to degenerative changes at an earlier onset, especially when observed in the earlier age groups.
The conus medullaris is the cone-shaped caudal ending of the spinal cord. Tumors of the cauda equina and the conus medullaris manifest with progressive symptoms, including pain, motor weakness, sensory deficit, and bowel and bladder symptoms.
Spondylolisthesis: A condition where one vertebra slips out of alignment with another. Most common is the fourth over the fifth lumbar vertebra or the fifth over the sacrum. The causes can be congenital or due to structural defects, degenerative changes and injury. Some people have it without symptoms, but others have major pain and nerve-related symptoms.
The Lumbosacral Joint or L5-S1: The lumbar spine rests upon the sacrum. The place where they meet is called the lumbosacral joint, or L5-S1. The L5-S1 junction is where the injury spondylolisthesis occurs.
Spinal stenosis is a medical condition where the spinal canal narrows and pinches the spinal cord and nerves, usually due to disc herniation or a tumor. This may affect the cervical spine, the lumbar spine or both, and results in low back pain as well as pain or abnormal sensations in the legs.

Thanks anon. That makes just a little more sense than the report. But props for trying.

I had two MRI's recently .... I also have claustrphobic issues, although not as bad as a couple of years ago. I go to Jeffersonville Open MRI .... the open sides make it more bearable and I ask them to put a cloth over my eyes so I cannot see - very helpful.
I spent several hours looking up stuff on the internet for those type of terms and came away no better off than before. Then I had a doctor 'splain it to me and it was much better. 'Cause I really don't care so much what it says, just what does it mean to ME .... as in what are they going to have to DO to me.
It is very easy to mis-interpret and or misunderstand the report without a doctor's help. Make one 'splain it to you. The one who ordered it owes you that much, eh?

I went to chiroprator and he took some X-rays (he read them) and did some tests. He diagnosed me with bulging/slipped/herniated disc L5-S1, spine ibifida, scoliosis. I also went to my general practitioner who took some X-rays (radiologist read them) and found nothing wrong with my back. All I know is that it hurts sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.
